    Yesterday there was the major announcement of the OpenGL 3.2 release, but the news coming out of today from New Orleans during SIGGRAPH is OptiX, which comes from the folks at NVIDIA. OptiX is a ray-tracing engine developed by NVIDIA to run on Quadro FX graphics cards and uses their CUDA architecture...

    Actually AMD released some raytracing & voxel demo stuff about a year ago.
    There's nothing new here - it's simply a raytracing engine, but developed by nvidia. Intel have also done quite a bit of research of their own, and have their own raytracing engine as well. In this case, it would appear that nvidia are actually trying to catch up.

    Cute demo. nVidia should try making something practical that runs on open standards like OpenCL that people (read: Apple) actually use.

    CUDA is open. The programming documentation is freely available. And, "people" != Apple.
