Last week we provided benchmarks of Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4, but Ubuntu is not the only Linux distribution preparing for a major update in the coming months. Also released in the past few days were OpenSuSE 11.2 Milestone 6 and Mandriva Linux 2010.0 Beta 1. To see how these three popular distributions compare, we set out to do our usual Linux benchmarking dance.

Why you guys use ext4 in MDV ? That makes the review totally biased . Also half of the test doesn't have mandriva.

So I urge you to treat every distro. equally . MDV might force ext3 by default but it does have ext4 so if you are reviewing you should have equal platform all over . Unequal platform makes the test biased.

Mandriva has made choice to use ext3 so they should be benchmarked with it. That would biased to change filesystem to ext3 for them.

PS. there is comment that Mandriva has configuration problems and some test did fail to run.

I suggest putting the software version and filesystem information into a table instead of the lengthy paragraph on page 1. This would make it easier to compare the distributions at a glance.

Why does everyone fail to mention Gentoo in these benchmarks, are you afraid that you favorite distro will lose the gentoo.

no, you can not fairly compare gentoo with the others because every single gentoo installation is unique. Some are fast others are slow others are utterly broken...

Not only that but how many years of use does it take to make up the difference in performance between gentoo and a "in the can distro" that is just lost to compiling?

When it compiles while you're using it and while you sleep/eat/go out/etc, no time is lost. Watts maybe.

Only new Gentoo users sit and watch gcc output fly by in a console window. It can be mesmerizing like the older defragmenter on Windows. But once that gets boring they don't waste time just waiting for it.
