What do you mean by "disabled" ? Were the monitors cloned, or displaying different content?
I mean that i disabled output to my benq monitor with the display tool that comes with ubuntu (in the preferences menu). Eg. the Benq screen went into stand-by and the TV was the only one displaying content.

Regarding 3D and dynamic power management, I meant that running the card at half speed is fine for 2D, but not so fine when running heavy 3D applications Your answer regarding KMS and power-management was enlightening none the less.

Thanks for all the help and info bridgman, it's really appreciated.

I doubt RV770 will be running "heavy 3D applications" for some time anyway. They're only writing in basic functionality now (as in ability to run programs with no rendering errors with allright speed) but some features and extensions which would give performance boosts (like VBO's that older chipsets already use) will come in a bit later.

    Okay, thanks for the explanation.

If anyone with just one screen using crtc 0 still doesn't get vsync with radeonhd, it could be because of an issue I've see using git xservers.

It does seem to depend on xserver, eg. recent git is working (but only by luck), but there was a time when it didn't work for me.

I have mentioned it on IRC, but haven't filed a bug as they still seem to be assigned to Luc.

I'm using vanilla xorg that comes with ubuntu, with only the TV active I still experience tearing. Could it be that even though the PC-Monitor is disabled, it's still connected to the first port, and RadeonHD still syncs to it even if it is disabled?

Check with xrandr --verbose that the TV is using crtc 0.

If it isn't then that would be the problem, there may be a way with xrandr that you can change crtcs, but I've never tried.

That looks like you should be getting vsync to me, though I haven't personally tested that hd behaves like radeon when you turn off one of a cloned pair as my second display is S-Video and hd doesn't support TV out.

The easiest solution would be to use radeon, now that you know how to set up power saving (you should actually save more as I don't think hd halves the clock again when in dpms).

If it is the same issue that I see and you really need to use hd eg, for HDMI audio then you could make a one line change to the code to hardcode the TVs vert res, not very good for when you are using the other screen, though.

Thanks for helping! I use DVI and a DVI->HDMI adapter and SPDIF for audio since my card doesn't have HDMI out, so radeon with power saving turned on is perfectly fine for me. Problem solved.

AFAIK using an adapter shouldn't prevent hdmi audio working as long as both ends support it.

I expect radeon will get it one day, as there are patches around.
