Ubuntu 9.10 Gets Unreleased Catalyst 9.10 Driver
Phoronix: Ubuntu 9.10 Gets Unreleased Catalyst 9.10 Driver
Besides the ATI Catalyst Linux driver still lacking public XvBA support (the library is in the driver, but there's no documentation or public implementations of it) even though we exclusively detailed the X-Video Bitstream Acceleration architecture nearly a year ago for enhancing HD video playback on Linux, the other leading problem we usually end up facing with AMD's proprietary Linux driver is their slow response time with supporting new X Server and kernel releases. AMD's policy has been not to focus on providing support for unreleased kernels/X servers, and then to provide the support once out, but while they do provide new releases on a consistent monthly basis, things usually don't end up working out as planned. In some cases it has taken AMD months to support new Linux components within their proprietary driver stack to the point that most recently support for the Linux 2.6.29 kernel wasn't even added until after the Linux 2.6.30 kernel had been out...
I had it installed yesterday and it's working well. Problems experienced ;
*screen flashes when starting wine-apps and KRandRTray.
glxgears with default window size =
17598 frames in 5.0 seconds
46227 frames in 5.0 seconds
47909 frames in 5.0 seconds
45540 frames in 5.0 seconds
47655 frames in 5.0 seconds
47955 frames in 5.0 seconds
48026 frames in 5.0 seconds
47151 frames in 5.0 seconds
47731 frames in 5.0 seconds
49737 frames in 5.0 seconds
50174 frames in 5.0 seconds
50120 frames in 5.0 seconds
48377 frames in 5.0 seconds
on HD x3870.
I used to get about 3K in standard driver, and about 7K with previous (when they worked!) fglrx drivers, so it's an improvement but could be better hey?
Does anyone know what score to expect from this HD 3870 card?
SMART MOVE TEAM !!!

Try using the other port. This happens when then 2nd port is used and
commands are executed. glxgears is really boring also it gets a higher score when the window is invisible and results invalid then.
I'm not sure, should we say thank you amd for making a card we bought from you actually work?
Gaming has vastly improved both in wine and linux native games! It wont be long before developers wont have any excuses not to port games to both platforms.
Fullscreen games did reorganise my icons though when quitting. This is annoying.
This happens mainly when you use another fullscreen res than your desktop res.
Ok thanks for the heads up. So I connect the monitor to the other port on the card!

That bug is so old that ATI maybe forgot about fixing it...
Really AMD. If you have to do this thrice, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.
What about tracking upstream development a little closer, so this doesn't have to keep happening?
