    Default upgrade possible?

if i have an amd sempron 3400+ processor chip , can i put in an amd athlon 64x2 4800+ or amd athlon 64 4000 ? is the sempron a 939 socket too?

You should be able to just fine. If you're running an older Socket 939 motherboard, you may need to flash the BIOS though. Just make sure you upgrade it to a S939 chip for the motherboard, not AM2.

The ASUS A8AE-LE does indeed show support for Athlon 64 X2 processors.

To flash your BIOS you need to attain it from your motherboard manufacturer... You will then need to flash it using floppy disks or another method (some manufacturers offer programs to flash from Windows or by other means). Though you may not need to flash your bios for Athlon 64 X2 support, it largely depends when the motherboard was made.

You should be fine then as it looks like your current BIOS supports the Athlon 64 X2.

It isn't absolutely necessary, but could be a wise choice.
