Phoronix: Plymouth Gets Pulled Into Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Plymouth is a Red Hat innovation that came around last year to provide a new, attractive boot graphical splash screen that went on to replace RHGB (Red Hat Graphical Boot) in Fedora 10. We have extensively talked about Plymouth as its interesting and provides a very clean boot interface thanks to it leveraging kernel mode-setting to offer a flicker-free experience and then providing tight integration with GDM and the X Server...

So if you have an NVidia card ou have to wait till nouveau enters in the kernel? And after that will you be able to boot your machine by using nouveau for the booting process and nvidia for X?
so, if nouveau is going to be in the 10.04 final release, shouldn't us nvidia users have kms support for plymouth also?
why would it have to be pulled into the kernel for kms?
sorry if i misinterpreted anything....
When using the NVIDIA driver you would fall-back to the basic progress bar for the boot process. You wouldn't just load the nouveau driver and then remove that module after Plymouth and then load the nvidia driver and start X, it wouldn't be a flicker free process and would be rather pointless for a few seconds of Plymouth and nouveau could leave your GPU in a bad state for the nvidia kernel module.
Wasn't the idea was to get rid of usplash completely in regular boots?
According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoundationsT...BootExperience the plan is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIBD4lRJS0YIn the case of hardware where we do not have a kernel mode setting driver, we will instead fallback to using ordinary framebuffer drivers which Plymouth is also capable of rendering to.
Has Canonical made any kind of statement indicating that inclusion of Plymouth means that their boot time won't be as fast as expected (at least for non-SSD machines)?
