Turned out that the spammers were getting around the no-links restriction for new users (which applied to posts but not to edits) by submitting a quick gibberish line then going back and editing it with a detailed message including links. Cutting down the edit window seems to have stopped them at the gibberish...

Well... The spam problem just upped itself a notch. I just got a spam private message flogging a porn site. Nice. And it got read at work no less.
