Default HOWTO: 3D Acceleration for ATI cards (works for SuSE, Mandriva and Debian)

HOWTO: 3D Acceleration for ATI cards (works for SuSE, Mandriva and Debian)

There is a howto on installing the 8.28.8 ATI 3D-Drivers, titled:

HOWTO: "3D Acceleration for ATI cards (works for SuSE, Mandriva and Debian)" at

It seems that they did not like me publishing pictures like these:

George Bush, President of the USA.

Bush praying at Wailing Wall.Tony Blair with Britain's Chief Rabbi.

    Vladimir Putin, President of Russia.

Putin and Russia's Chief Rabbi, Berel Lazar.

Bush and Angela Merkel (Angela Kasner).

Suggestions for changes or additions welcome.

On one of the other threads here, I saw that someone claimed his 9200 was clocking over 12,000/5 = 2,400 FPS for glxgears.

Is this correct. Here's what I get with my card:

    8.28.8 ATI Drivers + 8.14.13 libGL.so.1.2 shared libraries

    Radeon A9250 128 MB card from ASUS (RV280 5960).

    # glxgears
    6090 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1218.000 FPS
    6784 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1356.800 FPS
    6787 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1357.400 FPS
    6788 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1357.600 FPS

    # fgl_glxgears
    Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
    870 frames in 5.0 seconds = 174.000 FPS
    990 frames in 5.0 seconds = 198.000 FPS
    962 frames in 5.0 seconds = 192.400 FPS
    987 frames in 5.0 seconds = 197.400 FPS

What other components are you using in the system?

I'll run some glxgears next time I have any Radeon 9250 systems powered up. I know some others on the forums have reported higher results.

Have you tried the open-source drivers lately for your setup? How has its performance compared?

No,... but I got these results from the Nividia on-board GeForce 6150 (with Nividia's driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8776-pkg2.run)

    #glxgears
    5182 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1036.400 FPS
    5528 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1105.600 FPS
    5530 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1106.000 FPS
    5531 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1106.200 FPS

So it is about the same as the performance from the ATI Radeon 9250.

Actually, the games performance seems generally better than that of the ATI Radeon 9250 (but maybe that is because the machine is more recent).

Maybe I should make it clear to ATI and friends.

The reason I have moved to nVidia for my new computer (and now my brothers) is due to the sad state of the Linux ATI drivers.

There seems to be nothing wrong with ATI cards themselves. It was just the nightmare getting them to work with Linux that motivated the change.

I think they call it, "Voting with one's feet/money."

The http://linux.coconia.net/ site has been forced closed by whoever runs www.100webspace.com.

It seems that they did not like pictures of GW Bush praying at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, with a Jewish Skullcap on, and others of Bush celebrating Chanukah, and others with him cavorting with dozens of rabbis.

Not yet, as you can imagine I have a very busy schedule. You may be in the recent part of this thread -- http://phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=256 as the performance DRI figures have been discussed there.
