Default Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Gets A New Theme, Logo

Phoronix: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Gets A New Theme, Logo

It's been on the agenda for quite a while now, but the Ubuntu artwork team and Canonical have finally finished work on the new default theme that will be used in forthcoming releases of Ubuntu Linux, including the release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" that will be available next month. It's not only a new theme that has arrived, but their brand with other visual assets have also been revised as well. Accompanying the new GTK theme is a new boot-splash screen for Plymouth, a new Canonical web-site, and a very different Ubuntu logo...

i agree 100%! purple adds so much to it's look.

i just hate the new font.. round bubble letters are much more human friendly.

if our skin wasn't so thin maybe we wouldn't care about sharp corners in our own home.

Put the window buttons on the right and the title in the middle and I won't complain more...

I expected further move in an elegant monochromish direction, but now it just looks like a cheap mac copy. And did they got rid of the bottom panel?

Yep. In my opinion it looks far better then Karmic. Btw. aren't those buttons from the Oxygene theme? :>

Remember all these artwork changes are not a deal breaker, there is a lot of other stuff behind the scenes that are improving and besides you can easily change the theme if you do not like it.

I'm looking forward to the new theme, just please, please make it trivial to keep the buttons to the right.

I also think the Humanity icon theme looks out of place with the new color scheme. The icons themselves are beautiful, but they feel out of place on those screenshots (too saturated).

Myself, I'll probably keep using the "New Wave" theme, which I find looks significantly better than the (admittedly ugly) Karmic theme and slightly better than those screenshots. Interestingly, everyone I know uses New Wave, too , so I hope it's still available out of the box on Lucid.

Personally I find the window buttons to be inconsistent in look and feel to the rest of the theme... actually even in the bar along the top the icon-o-graphy is quite inconsistent in feel.

While I like the intent behind the rebranding, and much of the thinking... the inconsistencies in the theme make it feel amateurish.

(Note I'm staying away from the actual look or colour of any particular element, because that is personal and perhaps regional... although it certainly doesn't feel very 2010 in terms of the state of graphic design right now)
