  • The Phoronix "It Blew Up Real Good" Tour

On my way back from Chernobyl (in Amsterdam at the moment), and it was certainly interesting and could spend so much more time than just two days in the area... A return trip may be warranted at some point in the future. Full details and 130+ photographs to be posted on Wednesday. But as inspired by John Bridgman in an earlier Chernobyl-related thread, I propose something to the following:

"The Phoronix "It Blew Up Real Good" Tour: A semi-organized, annual tour and gathering amongst anyone in the Phoronix community that seeks to explore the greatest explosions, manufactured landscapes, and destructive phenomenons around the world."

Anyone interested? Well, judging by the earlier thread and those that contacted me about Chernobyl, I am sure some are interested Feel free to start throwing around ideas... Basically if anyone is interested in visiting any "crazy" / unique places, start throwing out ideas. If there is sufficient interest, I am sure it will not be an issue for me to arrange something with my sponsors for either subsidizing the cost of the tour (so you would be more or less just responsible for airfare, accommodations, etc) or arranging a free-drink reception, etc.

This is relevant to my interests.

    Some thoughts on other locations:
1: Tsar-bomba ground zero (kindof remote, though).
2: Mayak (USSR nuclear waste processing plant responsible for multiple of the worst radiation releases in history)
3: hiroshima/nagasaki (they blew up real good)

Or Nevada test site, which has seen so many detonations it looks like the surface of the moon. Not sure if we'd be allowed in, though.

If you look on their web site I believe they said they can do specialised tours for visiting groups, but I'm not sure how much you'd be able to see beyond the normal monthly tours.

I believe Trinity used to be open to the public a couple of times a year, I'm not sure whether it still is.

I was in both places last October, in Hiroshima you can still see one buildings from that time and some very nice memorials, also the spot where the bomb exploded in the air (it did not explode on the ground), but all in all left me with a sad impression. The rest of Hiroshima is a lively city though. In Nagasaki I found that it had moved on a bit more then Hiroshima, but then from what I understood it was not destroyed as much as Hiroshima because the bomb exploded more in a bowl area between some mountains.

oops press post to soon, to continue, if you did not know about the bomb and would not look for it then both cities are very normal japanse cities, lots happening, lots to see, extremely friendly people.
