    Default Is mplayer-git still alive?

Both branches of mplayer-git have not had commits since June 4. I hope they haven't been abandoned.

These branches had features such as multithreading, better VDPAU and subtitle support, and order chapters.

    -----

The primary developer of mplayer-git was kicked off the MPlayer Dev Team last month.

    Moin,

The MPlayer Team has decided that due to long standing differences,
Uoti Urpala is no longer a member and developer of the MPlayer Project.

The MPlayer Team would like to ask Uoti, that the fork he has been
working on for quite some time, is labled as such with an clearly
    distinguishable name.

It seems like Uoti is still updating the build scripts for mplayer-git, so the newest FFmpeg and FFmpeg-mt can be still used with mplayer-git, even if mplayer-git itself doesn't appear to have been updated for a while.

Looks like it's a pissing match between devs within the MPlayer community. Not knowing who's right or not, I couldn't say one way or another which way to follow- though Uoti did make some salient points on the subject regarding his Git branch of the codebase.

Meh. I'm kinda over mplayer now that vlc has come so far.

Any reason why we should still be using mplayer for video playback?

Because the interface on VLC is horrible.

Not to mention it barely can do multi-line subtitles. MPlayer is also much faster.

Well I sent off an e-mail to Uoti asking him if he's still maintaining the Git branch.

I told him earlier this month that I would be willing to make an Ubuntu PPA with automated builds of mplayer-git, but if it's no longer being updated, I'm just going use SVN instead.

Uoti just responded to my e-mail.

He's been a bit busy lately and has made some non-public changes in the last few weeks.
