It's an LTS release, so they're stuck between not wanting to ship with old software versions that they'll have to support for years, and not wanting to ship new versions with major bugs that will affect users today.

Yea, but I'm curious to see how stable it is now that it comes out, especially on the server side.

These GLX 1.4 changes were from 1.8.0. Why backport them in the first place to a LTS?

Not surprised. Franken-Xserver -- freak. With all the backporting, it's surprising that it'll even boot up.

With RHEL6 Beta being out (and RH employing developers rather than headless chickens), I really can't see too many people wasting their time on this hopeless mess.

This is great and now we can hope for excellent results in Ubuntu vs. Win7 vs. Mac.This might not be related to anything but Intel hardware but we can all see how well Ubuntu is crafted.

Developers add ambitious patches like this fairly early in the development cycle and see what happens. That way, if the ambitious patches work, the next release gets some nice new features. If they don't work, then the developers remove the patches, and the next release is no worse than the previous one.

Of course, the real WTF here is the fact that GLX 1.4 has been around for about 10 years, and we're only now supporting it.
