Not much to go on with what they've given us so far.

Only 3 of those 8 are even somewhat consistent with Fedora -- floral, atom, and wires. Wires has been done and floral is too cartoonish -- has a bit of an F7 or FC6 feel. The atom concept looks promising, but the graphics need some more work. The rest of them simply don't match Fedora AT ALL.

I think you are missing the idea of "concept" artwork. This is just a quick sample from each of the artist to demonstrate an IDEA and does not represent the final image in any shape or form.

Not exactly surprising - Fedora are always on the leading (bleeding) edge when it comes to adopting new stuff. They were certainly going to consider systemd - the major question being whether it would be mature enough in time for F14. Clearly, they thing that it is, or if not, that it will ready in time.

Yes systemd has just been built in koji and it's likely to hit Rawhide tomorrow. Of course this is just an attempt, if things get really wrong they'll just roll back to upstart.

Not quite. systemd although announced only recently has been under development for about six to seven months at this point if you look at the git history. We don't know whether it will be ready in time and that has not been decided yet. The plan is to evaluate it as a default option in Rawhide for sometime and if it is not ready by the time of the freeze, switch back to upstart and continue development. systemd btw has been in Rawhide as a non-default option for quite sometime already. We were waiting for the man pages to be written and SELinux policy to be changed first. It will become default in Rawhide in a day or two and then we will start gathering feedback via wider testing.
