    Default Best Linux g965 board?

    Hi All,
A friend wants me to build her a machine with linux preinstalled. I have settled on using a Core 2 platform. I especially like the thought of fully open source, vendor supplied drivers for graphics networking etc.

I'm looking at any g965 motherboard. I will be using all SATA Drives so the Jmicron problems can be ignored. I would appreciate any recommendations.

I assume you mean p965 motherboards.
I have read that the Asus P5B series works pretty well.

Though it is not p965, the Asus P5N-E SLI (nvidia 650i chipset) for core 2 duo is supposed to work well also. Phoronix will have a review for it in May:

no i really did mean g965. I'm not looking to overclock, and 3d for my friend means at most bery or compiz. The g965 boards on newegg have some very mixed linux reviews, and I'd trust the opinion here more.

I looked at the product in question and searched for linux in the reviews. I know it's not a scientific methodology but it has saved me problems in the past.

I do like asus as a brand, but the reviews on newegg are quite negative.
A user called "Mike" claimed that the built in NIC didn't function. Looking further into it, this board apparently uses a Realtek RTL8111 which isn't supported in 2.6.20.

This is meant to be a build for the average user, and I'd rather not have to deal with an additional NIC. The goal is to have a machine that is easily integrated and has open source drivers for all components. I've heard rumors that the G35+ (Bearlake) due soon will be a powerhouse so to speak for open source linux graphics. With the state of g965 boards right now, i might just wait.

If some one has experience with a g965 board that plays nice with linux on the whole and not just graphics let me know.

Thanks for all of you help.

I was referring to the P5B in my post:

Apparently, there is a Q965 chipset:

    and a G965 chipset:

The Q and the G have integrated graphics. I was not aware of those. They both have Intel graphics.

    Default asus p5b

I just built a new system with the asus p5b. I needed to use the beta of Fiesty Fawn and a 'disable' command to get everything working. It was a bit of a trial, but I must say it has been quite stable once I finally got it working.

    duke out
