The same is true of graphics on Linux- its so frustrating to have to conditionally add features based on both hardware and driver limitations - why force these limitations on application developers? The standards are there, and have been there for years!
I don't think slamming the KDE developers for adding new features is right. Doing so is basically telling the entire industry to bottleneck itself by waiting for the open drivers to play catch up, and by 4,5, sometimes even 6 years. I'm up for ditching the open driver support over slowing down the industry.
