Hmm this leaves me confused. I have an Elantech touchpad, which is supported by the Synaptics driver, and I definitely have multi-touch support since years: double and triple tapping, two-finger scroll, etc.

Wasn't this supported on Synaptic-proper touchpads? Isn't it the same multi-touch we talk about?

However as there's already a working multi-touch implementation for Elantech, I don't see what were Novell's patent concerns based on...

I'm under the impression that newer Synaptics touchpads such as the "Clickpad" use an entirely different mechanism for multi-touch support.

Does anybody know if the new Pinch feature will work on older touchpads like the 6.x series?

I've downloaded all the patches and compressed them. Download here: http://www.speedyshare.com/files/246...atches.tar.bz2. All the patches patch successfully using git xf86-input-synaptics, but it won't compile correctly after patching.

Now we just need to figure out how to enable multitouch on all those touchpads that physically support multitouch, but are merely locked down by the firmware.

FWIW I get the same errors with http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38120
But it seems to work.
