And how much faster is HD4670 with proprietary drivers compared to Nvidia GeForce GT 220?
Gaming is not blazingly fast, but Quake Live should be fine. It certainly works, and is more than playable.
In general, expect a fraction of the binary driver's 3d performance (1/3, maybe) when using the open drivers. However, the free drivers shine at 2d, XVideo, xrandr support and general stability. Most native stuff will run, WINE stuff is more problematic.
There is no video playback acceleration for the free drivers comparable to VDPAU at the moment. Some solution based on shaders will eventually appear, but there is little usable code right now. XvMC is just becoming usable with the r600g driver, and that's just MPEG2 for now. But it should lead to better things in the future.

The developers have estimated that given the amount of man-hours invested in the open source driver, it will reach 60-70% of the performance of the proprietary driver.
For r600-evergreen, expect 60%-80% of fglrx by late 2011 or early 2012. Should be in the 2012H1 distribution releases (Eg. Fedora 17, Ubuntu 12.04)
Fusion should probably get to 60%-80% of fglrx the same time as evergreen, as it's internally very similar.
I have not heard of any estimate for northern islands yet, probably because they have just started to develop the support for it.
Recent r300g results are very positive, though, in some games it has even reached parity with fglrx, according to some posts on here.
So I think that 75% of the blob is reachable with enough time and effort. And some of these optimisations will benefit all drivers, as they deal with shared components. And 75% of the blob would be good enough for pretty much everybody.
Checking the RadeonFeature matrix, nothing in 3D works still with 3D or at best, WIP. That's with R600/700. So, nothing for Evergreen and probably at least two years at best with NI.
The progress is still too slow.
If you compare binary drivers, I don't know how fglrx compares to Nvidia with newer cards but OSS is good for a hardline or purist solution only.

6xx/7xx/Evergreen 3D boxes are all marked "MOSTLY" (ie implemented with known bugs) except for the just-added GL3/GL4 feature rows (eg geometry shaders) and performance enhancements like texture tiling. The transition from "MOSTLY" to "DONE" is always slow because there is no clear rule for when the transition should happen.
The WIP entries are for Northern Islands not Evergreen. Only one of the NI models has even been released...
