That hack sounds weird because the tool does not write any config file for oss drivers now. More likely that restarting kdm would work.
The father of the LiveCD as a usable LiveCD, not just as a tech demo, is entering the Alpha testing stage and entering Beta.
Mepis 11 Beta 1 was released a couple of days ago. We would appreciate as many people as possible testing the distribution.

Couple of general issues that we know of so far. There seem to problems with the LiveCD booting and dropping to a black screen on session load.
Simply drop to command prompt (control alt F1)
Log in as root (root / root)
run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Most of the time this will set up a proper display for the end user.
Mepis 11 Beta 1 can be downloaded through: http://www.mepis.org/mirrors
And to go ahead and shoot down the F.U.D. before it gets a chance to start, you do not need a financial subscription to download, install, use, interact with, or give copies to your friends.

That command did only write something until Debian lenny, but not with Debian squeeze, so it is completely useless now.
