  • HD5650 (Redwood) on Fedora 14

I am wondering what packages I should install to get the best out of my laptop's video, in terms of latest driver support.

Should I install fedora-release-rawhide, and pull in F15 packages?

Are there specific packages that I need to install update to get the latest release drivers?

I don't know the answer in Fedora-speak, but for Evergreen you pretty much want the newest driver code you can get. At minimum you probably want :

    2.6.37 kernel
    radeon (ddx) driver from git
    mesa 7.10
    Test signature

Well I tried installing some Mesa packages from fedora-release-rawhide (F15) and had some issues. So that's why I posted, thought someone might be able to help

I'll try installing a few other packages over the weekend, see if it improves.

OK I took a gamble, and updated some packages to fc15 from fedora-release-rawhide

        Installed: kernel-2.6.37-2.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: libdrm-2.4.24-0.1.20110106.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: mesa-libGL-7.10-0.18.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: xorg-x11-server-common-1.9.99.1-2.20101201.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.9.99.1-2.20101201.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.13.2-0.4.20110107git0e432dff9.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: mesa-libGLU-7.10-0.18.fc15.x86_64
        Updated: mesa-dri-drivers-7.10-0.18.fc15.x86_64

It was a gamble in updating the xorg-x11-server packages, but it looked OK until I got to the login screen and couldn't do anything.

So I updated the drivers package also

        Updated: xorg-x11-drv-dummy-0.3.4-3.fc15.x86_64

Now I am running, have some issues with the quiet mode locking up, but hitting escape and it gets to the login screen and I'm typing this.

Best of all compiz-gnome effects work and this:

        Code:
        # glxinfo | grep -i "\(render\|opengl\)"
        direct rendering: Yes
        OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD REDWOOD
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
        OpenGL extensions:
