    Nothing new.. overheating on my mobility x1600 happened for ages now with the open driver, but it survived... for the past 3 years (and I'm on Arch, gallium, and whatever new is out there).

    Setting the power profile to low is not really super friendly too, since as you said it, it's still HOT and 2d/3d performance drastically changes. AUTO doesn't really help either.

    The closed driver did a better job at that... but then again, you know support was dropped.

    That's very strange... usually there is a delta of 1-2C between catalyst and open drivers. With my HD3870 it works VERY well (even dynpm since 2.6.38).
