Default Radeon and ATI HD 5670

    Hi,
I'm running opensuse 11.4 KDE 4.6 and I decided to try the open source radeon driver, as the man page says my card is now supported (I have been using fglrx). I've gotten fglrx running, but the 2D is not very smooth, and I have no direct rendering, and no 3D. After much internet searching, and posting on the openSUSE forums, I'm still grasping at straws.

Is anyone familiar with similar problems, and has a solution? Or point me to a useful article? As far as I know, my card is supported. If I'm mistaken, please let me know. I am not using a xorg.conf file, but if you want to see anymore info, please just ask and I'll post.

    Cheers!

    OK, let's see...

    http://susepaste.org/47620533

First, according to your second xorg.log paste the system is loading radeon, radeonhd, vesa and fbdev drivers (!!) but in the end it appears that the radeon driver is being used. The problem is that you seem to be booting with kernel modesetting disabled and so the radeon driver is disabling acceleration (user modesetting is only supported with shadowfb, not hardware acceleration).

I believe the 2.6.37 kernel is new enough to have Evergreen KMS support but not 100% sure, so I guess next step is to find out exactly why KMS is not coming up. Can you pastebin your dmesg output after boot please ?

    Yes and no

It looks familiar but seems a lot shorter than what I am used to seeing, and a lot of the messages I expect are not there. Is this the full output from dmesg ?

The file was too large for one pastebin, so I devided it into about eight, but appparantly the moderators denied my post for some reason, because I tried to post the links in a reply to this thread several times over the past few days. Idk what happened.

Yesterday I did a fresh install of the root partition, but unfortunately that did not fix my problems. Here's the new file since then:

Thanks. It's funny, I'm still not seeing any of the normal drm (kernel graphics driver) messages. It's like your kernel is built without the graphics driver or something...

I'm not finding a "dmesg" log anywhere in my system, I think openSUSE names it something else, and I am not sure what. I do have a dmesg executable, but that has not been modified for a month, and I didn't think that's what bridgman asked for.
Here's another file, but let me know if you want the executable or another specific file. Sorry for my ignorance.
