Choosing a GFX card for new Linux Desktop

Power hungry cards are 100$+ range (100 watts upon load and up).
They also provide GDDR5 memory over 192bit+ buses.
Im strongly unsure how llano system is gonna compensate that.

1 exampel : vram you can buy an nvidia tesla for 4000€+ with 12gb vram thats poor ! because you can run an Llano with 32gb vram.

Llano isn't about max speed its the max speed per watt usage.

the fastest llano will have 100 watt tdp.

and no other system can beat the llano on speed per watt not an nvidia gpu and not an intel cpu.

yes sure the cpu part of the software need to support multicore .

if you build an system with 100 watt tdp with an intel cpu and an nvidia gpu you lose against Llano.

It would just have to use 3-4 memory controllers and up, using 3-4 slots minimal (or more) of DDR3@2000+mhz memory (which you will have to purchase as well).

no sorry llano only have a dualchannel with 1866mhz+ interface.
but if you are happy with the speed of the 6550 then you are right there.

Add drivers on top of it(e-350 still required DRM drivers) and you have a deal. Video acceleration? OpenGL3+ support? In far future, if any.

opengl3 is over 60% ready right now. and Xv is a kind of "Video acceleration"

Panik you are just an liar because i use video playback functions every day with the radeon driver and i use the graphic functionality every day today i play warzone2100 and games still not mean wine only and only the catalyst makes trouble and what is your FUD meaning "limited options" ?? i ise the newest distros and versions of xorg right now i use kubuntu 11.04 alpfa +xorg-edgers but yes you play bullshit bingo very well you got the highscore.

Does the current Catalyst driver work with the newest X Server? No.

My point is that the same issues or deficiencies still remain. They might be considered minor but many Linux users seem to indicate some things that are lacking.

Perhaps, they're satisfactory and sufficient for others. I am not sure whether the lacking features would be a problem for me or not. But, unfortunately, I sometimes need Windows software so I either have to boot up Windoze or use Wine. I'm told a Nvidia card is better for those situations.

Also, for HTPC use, I'm also told a Nvidia card is better. Still?

Anyway, I'm looking at the GTX 460 (probably 768mb ver.) and HD 6850 for a card. I think my limit would be $150 or maybe less. But, they seem like good deals right now.
