It works out of the box in qemu in my computers. Anyway, I don't think coverity can help a lot about that, most problems are because of unimplemented (or badly implemented) features, as far a I know.

Yah it works and boots up pretty quick... but if anything rather normal is done is crashes and or locks up... like installing firefox or opera.

Oh, yes, I got you wrong before. That's (sadly) pretty normal. Anyway, that must be regressions, opera 10.63 and Firefox 3.0 should work.

Someone in this thread said that this project exists because Microsoft's implementation of the NT kernel sucks.

Ahem... MS's implementation is light years ahead compared to this.

Light years ahead with a sucking implementation...

    *Cough*ReactOS runs on a Pentium2 2x333mHz with virtual desktops*Cough*

How does an implementation that crashes just by running userspace software suck less then Microsoft's? Oh, I see. If it comes from MS, it sucks by definition, even if it runs rock-stable (which it does.) If a FOSS project does an implementation that is half-assed and unstable for over a decade, then it doesn't suck just because it's free.

What kind of twisted logic is that?

Want to compare this to an Alpha version of Windows Vista? (7 doesn't count)

Wow, anybody who claimed ReactOS is anything but joke is so wrong!

I will explain what reactOS really is, lets start! I wont repost lots of text in russian, only links. You can use google translate on that if you wish, to verify. Im russian.

    http://www.reactos.org/ru/about_whatisreactos.html

    Claims:
    - Reactos is windows OS enemy. Not linux enemy.
    - Linux will never be adopted by some people, that use old software and have habbits.
Reactos is designed for that people - so they don't even notice the difference in the end. This is where linux will fail.
    - Reactos uses huge portions of WINE, but it is not linux+wine.

Sounds so heroic, no? Lets continue:
    http://www.reactos.org/ru/about_whyreactos.html
    Claims:
    - There is multitude of linux distros, but they are for server(*doh!*). Desktops are not conquered yet and will barely ever be(*doh!*).

    - There is no NT clone. GNU was Unix clone, Reactos is opensource NT clone.

    - Linux+WINE will be perfect windows replacement. Linux is soo hard (*doh!*) and the compatibility will never be perfect.

    - Reactos is better than Linux there, because it uses all software and drivers(*sic*) for windows, instead of emulating or rewriting them.

    - There are no plans microsoft will release windows under gpl license (lol).

    - So reactos is third (*doh!*) alternative for people that do not want to leave the environment they are used to (not linux enemy? 1), use all the written applications and drivers (by making those protesters using winapi and technology further instead of switching, right - not linux enemy 2).

And there is final part, that will lift off your illusions:
    http://www.computerra.ru/focus/332964/

Reactos is a free windows clone.. instead of rewriting heaps of code that microsoft wrote for years, they just write the compatible kernel and continue to use drivers and other software. (so its nothing more than that, no revolution past this. reactos is just alternative windows kernel)

Next is paragraph "HISTORY"/"ИСТОРИЯ" from that I will just translate a few important sentencies, without ripping them from the sense.

    - Reactos is written more than 10 years. The problem is with low amount of men-power. Everything lives on enthusiasm of developers.
    - They took some ideas from windows(disasm), some from NT, and some own. Wrote drivers that hanged(worked only because of) exactly on its(kernel) bugs .
    - They took winapi from WINE and it started to crash badly so they rewrote NT-compatible kernel and NT-compatible drivers (wait, whats about reusing drivers? Impossible due to windows bugs? You claimed reactos will make us independent from Windows, but what happens instead?)
    - They wrote package management system , similar to linux, for reactos. (please remember that, you will understand the whole later)

Next paragraph is titled "USERS" / "ПОЛЬЗОВАТЕЛИ"
    - Free code-base will allow not to reinvent bicycles. Before ntfs-3g happened, the only way to access ntfs on linux before that - was to use a driver that was essentially reactos stripped of everything except the fs code.

    - Some company that prefers to stay undisclosed, uses reactos code and contributes back to directx clone stack. They return us the fixed DLLs.

    - Another interesting application point is education. There are people that want to look at guts of closed source windows code.

Next paragraph is titled "DEVELOPERS" / "РАЗРАБОТЧИКИ" I hope now everything comes clearer to you.
    - Main developers are not from russia, but from europe and usa. Why is reactos interesting for developers. Just for fun.

    - People work either for experience or for fame. Four developers leaved recently, three of them to Microsoft. Microsoft highly appreciates them and received them with open arms.

    - Primary developer, Alexey, works on Reactos because his doctor work at university is about operating systems, so he combines fun and usefulness.
    - He also would like to "show free NT in microsoft's face"
    - The system already has rised commercial interest, but its not polished and commercial application will unavoidably rise requirements, so its not ready yet.

The rest is about attempt to sabotage and takeover reactos code by claiming that it contains copy-paste code from microsoft, where reactos developers reverse engineer the code but only for documentation and rewrite reactos based on documentation(clean room reverse engineering/ aka chinese wall), so attempt failed and they froze the code base, reinspected it to 99,5% state, as well as increased control on upstreaming patches.
    ------- Thats all
    So what is "Reactos" really?

Just for fun attempt to re-write only nt-kernel and nothing more. Everything will stay microsoft, people that could have used and helped linux will use reactos instead and this is highly appreciated by microsoft.

Personally I have nothing against "hardness" of linux architecture or "re-adaptation stress"

    Why?

Because its the only real way. Not alternative, but way. Linux it is.

Windows is so rotten, even if you rewrite small part, you will depend on microsoft sick will. You will just have to be assimilated by microsoft, land in that trash back again, its only matter of time.
