but seriously, apart from the theme of the splash, its quality is horrible, so i only hope, some kind of jokster got it somehow pulled in the build, as previous splashs were all relatively good quality.

It's really bad. Maybe the developers do those kind of jokes on the development versions? Luckily some distros, like openSUSE, use customized splash screens for most programs.

Other graphics projects (say Krita I believe) have successfully fund raised money for a chunk of focused development... considering how widely used GIMP is, it seems sad that they haven't. I don't see it necessary to have corporate support - it needs end user support, everyone who finds it of value tossing in a dollars to see it improved.

1) "i'm sure the developers didn't intend" - you're wrong. The current splash screen shows a dominatrix and the gimp mascot in a cage. And that's stupidly and unnecessarily offensive. Additionally, the pejorative term "gimp" was around long before the buggy, feature-lacking, and awkward graphics program was.

2) "taking offense to something is purely your choice" - you're wrong again. Being offended is something that "happens." You don't "choose" your feelings. You DO choose how you respond to feelings. For example, you may choose not to use software that's stupidly and unnecessarily offensive in name.

Once wrong when you suggest the gimp developers are too stupid to know the word "gimp" is offensive, and twice wrong that it's my problem. I won't have a problem, I'll just choose Photoshop - along with 99% of the graphics professionals.

In fact, the problem belongs 100% to the gimp developer and user. Because their software is knowingly, blatantly, stupidly, and unnecessarily offensive in name and in (the latest blatant, stupid, unnecessary splash screen) image, they should expect that many people will choose not to use it. Certainly, the gimp will never gain a foothold in education or professional graphics shops. As a bonus, the developers and users that defend the name will also look stupid, foolish and disrespectful.

1. ...what!? do you have some special version? because i've used several versions of it and NONE of them had anything caged up. the one i use is some celestial image and i've used another version that had http://photoserver.ws/files/42xfudujy61djn4jh70g.png and another image a little more polished up than that.
I'm sure the REAL definition of gimp has been around even longer than the pejorative term. gimp stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. acronyms are a lot easier to remember when they sound like something, or better yet, when they're a word. open source has enough trouble with recognition.

2. really? if the intention was to be insulting then like i said before, they'd use an actual gimp as a mascot, not some furry animal (idk what wilbur is). and being insulted IS based on your decision:
when people accept what is wrong or different about themselves, they won't get insulted when someone says "you're fat" or "you're dumb". if they put their feelings into a situation that clearly does not involve them, they will get insulted.
there are, however, situations where getting insulted by something unintentional or irrelevant shows signs of being human, such as murdering someone for their race or ethnicity.

but finding the name of a program insulting when (from what i've seen) has no intention to do so, is clearly just trying to get riled up over something that doesn't matter. unless you or someone you know are a gimp and ashamed of it, the name of this program has NOTHING to do with you, so it is ENTIRELY your choice to get offended; and to get offended over something that literally makes no difference at all to the content or purpose of the program is a laughable behavior and motive.

its situations like this why countries like france and america are becoming socialist. governments are doing to people exactly what you want done to gimp - change so nobody is offended. but you know what happens in the end? restrictions of all kinds, even your own opinions. seriously if everyone thought like you then the name would have changed a long time ago. but, clearly you aren't the majority, plenty of people really like gimp and support it as much as photoshop. personally, i don't think the program is that great, i just think your complaint is as unethical as your point of view for complaining in the first place.

btw, gimp isn't used for educational purposes because its constantly under development, its missing features, it lacks dedication, theres no reliable support (a HUGE downside to most community based applications), and its not considered a professional tool. in the professional world, you don't use incomplete, unstable, hobbyist software - you pay for the good stuff.

hmm i didn't know thats what the new sign-in screen was. i still use 2.6. i can see why that'd be offensive but its still supposed to be taken as a joke, and i still don't think the developers intend the program to be associated with the derogatory term of gimp. i couldn't agree more with that comedian, pretty funny skit too.

I think what the comedian was getting at is the completely right perspective to have in the contexts that he's talking about.

But, when we're talking about a software product, albeit an open source one, a name all by itself can harm adoption a bit. The particular image an object portrays is the sum of many things I guess, especially when it comes to software. And if the Gimp was the most technically superior and easiest to us art software available I'd think you'd see people be more prepared to over look it's title. But it's not (at least on the other platforms) and so while it might not be a deal breaker for many, I still don't think it's helpful at all.

Programmers can pretend all sorts of things don't matter and are unimportant, especially if those things clash with their own weird little senses of humor, and those same programmers may not really care about adoption numbers and popularity. They may need to have their little in-jokes expressed in their creations they lovingly create but in this case I'm with the "change the name" crowd.

Its name wont stop me using it, especially because it's about the best graphics package on my chosen platform and my needs are met by it, but I don't think its current name helps adoption with the masses at all, especially on platforms where their choices are more abundant. Its name has been noted by several Windows users I've discussed the package with so it doesn't go unnoticed.

I don't want to over state the importance of its name, but I don't think it should be understated either. Perhaps the development team aren't too worried about mass adoption by the fickle masses.

I've asked lots of native english speaking people both in and outside of the computer-realm and everyone has told me that 'gimp' is anything but a 'loaded' word. Many of them didn't even know what it meant or in what context it was to be used.

As for development speed, it can't have eluded anyone interested in gimp that they have 2.5 developers at the moment, and that they have never had a huge amount of people working on it. Yet they have developed something as useful as gimp, which strikes me as pretty amazing. It will never seriously compete with Photoshop, that's just unrealistic since Photoshop has 20+ full time developers hand-picked for their expertize. So if you want that kind of toolset and support, you simply have to pony up, meanwhile for those of us with lesser demands, gimp is a great free tool.

I'm impressed by what the guys have built, and done so for no cost to the community. I should've done it long ago but I've just donated US$20 to the guys. I've never noticed the "Donate" button of the web site before.
