Some OpenGL apps have problems because of the libGL which should get fixed by 8.42. That's why I tell people to wait for 8.42 before making conclusions of the new OpenGL driver.
For anybody who might be eager to try the driver on "unsupported" hardware (you can download it either from an untrusted site flooding every forum or select HDxxxx card at ATI website to get to the driver), I have a warning.
I tried it on my Radeon 9600 XT (RV350), Debian unstable. The installation is easy, the performance is superb (simple test, glxgears 2400 PFS vs 3500 FPS). However, I get visible graphic glitches while working in plain 2D KDE (no XGL or anything else).
There is also an issue with libgl.so.1 missing, just symlink there libgl.so.1.2. Wine is not working.
I'm not sure what I should think. It's an improvement over ATI's total ignorance of Linux users, but I see the company trying to push me to buy crappy R400-500 to get my computer working (have you read anywhere anything about good old reliable R300-350 last low power consumption cards specifications)?Code:err:wgl:get_render_type_from_fbconfig Unknown render_type: 0 err:d3d:WineD3D_CreateFakeGLContext Can't find a suitable iPixelFormat err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglMakeContextCurrentARB) - not found err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglGetCurrentReadDCARB) - not found err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglCreatePbufferARB) - not found err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglGetPbufferDCARB) - not found err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglReleasePbufferDCARB) - not found err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglDestroyPbufferARB) - not found err:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetProcAddress (wglQueryPbufferARB) - not found err:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps GL_Extensions returns NULL err:d3d:InitAdapters Failed to initialize gl caps for default adapter err:wine_d3d:WineDirect3DCreate Direct3D8 is not available without opengl
Feel free to post any problems / solutions.

besides, this 8.41 has beta beta beta everywhere in the release notes. what did you expect?
R500 works for me fine. Malikith, which distribution are you using and how did you try to install the driver?
There are beta versions and beta versions - this one is more like internal beta released to calm down all the people, so I just wanted to save some work to everybody with "unsupported <R400 cards" who might be tempted to test the driver.
They are releasing specifications only for high-end cards to make everybody switch, which seems funny because all game loving Linux users already have nVidia card![]()
Please answer this question: What would have happened if AMD would have said "we're delaying the release to fix some more bugs"? You know the answer.this one is more like internal beta released to calm down all the people
No.They are releasing specifications only for high-end cards
No.because all game loving Linux users already have nVidia card
Well what I mean't was theres still quite a few people out there that have issues all across the board, but as for me...
I'm running Debian Sid, the way I install the driver was like this:
After the debs are built, I installed them all one by one, afterwards:Code:./ati-driver-installer-8.41.7-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Debian/sid
Afterwards I went to start X:Code:module-assistant prepare module-assistant update module-assistant build fglrx module-assistant install fglrx aticonfig --initial
I see my monitor change resolutions, then it hangs for about 3 seconds, and goes back into the console. Heres my full xorg log.Code:/etc/init.d/gdm start
My Xorg log
If you have any ideas i'm more than welcome to try. Oh and heres my xorg.conf.
My xorg.conf
I can confirm that wine 0.9.44 is not working, at least when it needs opengl. There is also an issue with libgl.so.1 missing, just symlink there libgl.so.1.2. Wine is not working.
But what do you mean, what do I have to symlink where? I haven't found any broken links, could you please tell me what you linked where??
Other then that, I think 'ati-linux-people' can finally see light at the end of the tunnel...but the tunnel is kinda still pretty long
Oh I'm using an old radeon 9800, I think it uses R350, by the way...
