8.41.7 on notebook with HD 2600 fatal server error

Hello everybody,

I've Ubuntu 7.04 feisty installed on my notebook and as driver I'm using a vesa driver. I'd really like to change this to an ATI driver. But when I reboot after following these instructions (method1): http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide
it says that my Xserver can't be started.

I get the following error:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

After that I get into the terminal.

When I type fglrxinfo it says this:

Error: unable to open display :0


Is there any fix for this? The vesa driver sucks real bad. I've read that other people can run the 8.41.7 drivers with a HD 2600 in their notebook.

I've read all the threads here about the 8.41.7, I've tried reconfiguring the Xserver, that did also not work.

how did you install them?
did you build/install the kernel modules?

sudo module-assistant build fglrx
sudo module-assistant install fglrx

i think that was what I hadn't done when I first tried to install fglrx on my laptop, and got the no screens found error

(the nvidia installer builds the modules automatically, doesn't it?)

edit: just saw what you wrote about following method 1 from that guide... i think the ubuntu repos have an earlier fglrx driver... (not sure though)
try to install it manually... (get the driver from ati)

I changed the sources.list file and it did say it was using driver 8.41.7. I didn't used the command module-assistant build fglrx because it was not shown as a step in the guide. I've tried to install it manually but that didn't work either. I guess I'll try ubuntu in again in a couple of months. I guess it'll be fixed then. The vesa drivers gave me a really unsharp screen.

Maybe remove restricted modules and use:
