I thought that nvidia has stopped supporting those older drivers as they weren't updated for the newest Xorg at least till now

I do know in fglrx-land that once support for older cards is dropped it's dropped...there are really no legacy fglrx drivers

The only one that does not get newer Xorg support is the 7x.xx series. All the others get Xorg updates. It just takes longer for those updates to appear in the legacy releases as priorities are concentrated more on the newer series of drivers (which covers cards introduced from April 2004 and on).

Edit: You can find regular updates through out the none 7x.xx series for newer Xorg version on every Xorg release. It may not be same day but it usually shows up a month or two later.
