Nobody said that it needs to be self-sustaining. If anything; we have the law of energy preservation to teach us just that. But what if you'd hook that up to the photovoltaic-piezoelectic-powered energy net, while also supplying the net with photovoltaic-piezolectric converted energy? The point is taking energy from the net to make it portable...its a waste of energy to build your pure silicon because you need pure silicon to oxidate it to become sand again.
