sdxc != exfat, the bigger devices should work fine when formatted with a proper filesystem.
Unfortunately, exFAT is part of the SDXC standard. So if you get a card that was formatted e.g. in a camera, it will probably have an exFAT filesystem.
Reading and writing raw blocks to SDXC should be no problem in Linux.
