However, you are correct that often optimizations are first done for Windows, then ported to OSX and Linux when time is available. Sometimes that never happens.

Ah, that didn't have anything to do with linux AFAICT. It was 64-bit builds everywhere. Which you could say was because Linux was the only platform heavily using it.
