Hmm isn't sony cut of other os support from ps3, with newer firmware? That outraged many and i.e. hacker group anonymous attacked sony for this. Sony got sued this in many countries i.e.:

In EU other os support was there for taxing. Sony get lower taxes because of it, it could sell them as computers not higher taxed video game console.

Sony is now amending their TOS for PSN that requires you to waive your right to sue using the bought off Supreme Court.

Either way, its great these guys are keeping the project to piss in Sony's eye alive!
