Yes, the nForce2 is well supported with a modern-day distribution and kernel. No closed binary drivers should be needed for the chipset. I haven't touched a nForce2 system in a year or two and it was working good back then but I don't recall if there were any APIC issues, I don't believe so but it may come down to the BIOS and motherboard.
nForce2 is Socket A for the Athlon XPs or Semprons and they only come in a single-core package.
