Ironhide didn't work for me, the virtualGL server doesn't start and the card continues to suck battery power. With the bumblebee project I've got everything from Optimus: large battery life and I can use the card as expected.

So, I'm looking to buy this laptop soon:

Does someone have experience with similar models? What works the best?

I installed bumblebee on this laptop(norwegian website): http://www.netshop.no/WebPages/Produ...px?plid=166260

It works fine, just remember to execute games through the "optirun" command.

What about wine games? Does that run with it?

It sounds like an Optimus laptop is an option if you can disable it or use 3rd party applications to deal with the switching.

    Interesting.

Wine works as expected, you just need to add the optirun command first.

    Something like "optirun wine something.exe".

If you need to add options, the sintaxis is like "optirun [optirun options] wine [wine options] something.exe".

Just edit the commands of existing launchers and add optirun at the start, after the ENV variables which often exist in Wine launchers.

By the way, there's work going on within the X server for Optimus support. But it still might take a lot of time before it's working in major distros.
