Small IMHO-style comment about nVIDIA vs. OSS policy: it's totally OK to do like they are doing as look as the quality of the binary blob as that high as it was during last five years. OSS drivers proven to be always lagging behind and in their current form their best purpose is to offer support for an older GPU hardware generations which had been declared unsupported by GPU vendors. Also, when it comes to ATI, OSS drivers might be more stable/bug-free variant for desktop compositing thanks to the general buggy state of fglrx driver.
