Small IMHO-style comment about nVIDIA vs. OSS policy: it's totally OK to do like they are doing as look as the quality of the binary blob as that high as it was during last five years. OSS drivers proven to be always lagging behind and in their current form their best purpose is to offer support for an older GPU hardware generations which had been declared unsupported by GPU vendors. Also, when it comes to ATI, OSS drivers might be more stable/bug-free variant for desktop compositing thanks to the general buggy state of fglrx driver.

except they provide jack shit for Tegra2, so you stuck with either outdated Android or an abominable half-outdated Ubuntu filled with Android's guts. those fuckers need basic support in kernel so they could make more artificially obsolescent crap. that's it, no more no less.

Yeah, thanks for pointing on this. All above I had written about quality of nVIDIA linux driver blob only applies to their desktop/workstation GPU Linux/FreeBSD blobs. Tegra 2 support sucks and ION support is also pretty much borked. On the other hand I'm totally content with the quality of the drivers they are offering for desktop and workstation products.

This isn't true anymore. You can get Tegra 2 support in recent kernels (it used to only be an Android Froyo 2.6.32 kernel) and you get recent binary drivers that have nothing to do with Android directly from NVIDIA, exactly like desktop products. See http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=163916 for the first release in this series. This package includes an X.Org driver supporting all recent X Servers (which is developed, maintained and supported by the same people who do the desktop driver), so you're free to use this driver package with Ubuntu Oneiric if you'd like.

It looks like NVIDIA doesn't want developers, though. One can go and buy a PandaBoard online for under $200, while getting your hands on an NVIDIA board requires forum lurking, a test and $400. No wonder they were dumped as the core platform for ICS after Honeycomb.

That being said, I do wish them success. In a way that doesn't involve them shooting themselves by keeping their source closed and shooting away devs.
