What about host CPU usage when the machine is idle?
Phoronix: KVM x86/x86_64: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Through Ubuntu 11.10
Here are benchmarks of Ubuntu Linux in a virtualized environment using KVM virtualization and testing every release from Ubuntu 11.10 all the way back to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

What about host CPU usage when the machine is idle?
And what about a comparison with bare metal of the same machine?
It would have been much better to have tested with the same Ubuntu versions on the host and guest.
By testing the same Ubuntu 11.04 KVM host with different Ubuntu version VM guests you are testing what?
The KVM code is in the host kernel. The QEMU emulator which runs inside the KVM environment is on the host.
Only by varying the KVM host Ubuntu version would you really have seen the performance of KVM evolve on Ubuntu.
