Default OpenSUSE 12.1 Is Set For Release Today

Phoronix: OpenSUSE 12.1 Is Set For Release Today

OpenSUSE 12.1 is set to be released later today. In this article are the first benchmarks of openSUSE 12.1 compared to the earlier openSUSE 11.4 release.

Default OpenSuse is primarily a KDE distribution

    http://en.opensuse.org/KDE

"Plasma Desktop from KDE is the default workspace on openSUSE."

So much for the comment in the article "this popular Linux distribution, openSUSE 12.1 ships with the GNOME 3.2 desktop complete with a relatively stock GNOME Shell. KDE SC 4.7 and Xfce 4.8 desktops are also available".

To be accurate, it should actually read "this popular Linux distribution, openSUSE 12.1 ships with the KDE SC 4.7 desktop. Xfce 4.8 and GNOME 3.2 (complete with a relatively stock GNOME Shell) desktops are also available".

Benchmarks should compare KDE performance changes between openSUSE 11.4 and openSUSE 12.1.

Default Multimedia Pack Portable for openSUSE 12.1

I have created a Multimedia Pack portable for openSUSE, the included programs and codecs are:

    1) vlc
    2) mplayer
    3) smplayer
    4) xine libxine1
    5) devede
    6) avidemux
    7) K3B
    8) K9Copy
    9) Audacity
    10) dvdrip
    11) ffmpeg
    12) transcode
    13) PACPL
    14) Mjpegtools
    15) dvdstyler
    16) sox
    17) audacious
    18) lame
    19) dvdshrink
    20) mediainfo
    21) isomaster
    22) w32codec
    23) libdvdcss

you can install any of the above without internet, they include all
the dependencies, just unzip the both files into a folder named MMP
and create a repository from that folder as a simple rpm folder in yast,
then make a search in the yast installer with the name of the program
and check it to install it, this is very important if you don`t have
internet at home, and besides, by default Open Suse doesn`t include
several codecs due to license matters.

I have created a blog about the MMP where you can download the pack:
