On the same-day as releasing the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 as the first GeForce graphics card based upon the new Kepler architecture, there's a binary driver update from NVIDIA that ushers in the official Kepler Linux support. There's also more surprising news out of the reverse-engineering Nouveau camp, on top of their surprises earlier today...

Very, very interesting. I wonder how long they've had access to these pre-release boards, and whether their efforts will support different chips in the series besides just the 680?

You've been on a roll with some fascinating news stories lately, Michael. A lot of it is due to external developments like new generations of hardware coming out all around the same time, but still, very "fun" to watch these articles over the past week.

Kepler is an incremental change from Fermi. SI is a completely new architecture (not just the shaders, but also the displays, memory controller, etc.) so there is a lot more work involved. Not only did we have to write a lot of new code, we had to get approvals to release all of the information on the new hardware which is a lot more than normally needs to be reviewed for an incremental change. If SI had been just an incremental change from NI the code probably would have been out at launch time or even before.

It's been released, from readme it's looks like gtx680 have vdpau feature set D.
