so how come fusion icon says it can't do indirect rending when glxinfo reports that glx_ext_texture_from_pixmap is available?

I believe it has something to do with $LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

The lack of documentation on actually **getting** aiglx to work properly is thoroughly lacking. You see a lot of posts mentioning it; but I think its just luck of the draw depending on how libraries get installed with given packages... the f7 ones didn't work with compiz after a default install(--buildpkg), but I heard something on some forums the livna-packages did... You could try the livna-f8 packages instead of the download from ati.
