I believe Free Software components like Nouveau and Wayland are the future. Eventually, I think Nouveau will get better performance, just like how Nouveau has progressed tremendously in the last 2 years.
Eventually, I think Nouveau will get rid of problems with patents (S3TC) and it will have VDPAU, things like Gallium3D/Mesa will get better with the latest OpenGL specs, power management will get better, and so on.
We will probably start seeing things like tighter integration with DMA-BUF, Wayland and the Linux kernel.
It's also even more amazing to know that Nouveau is part of the Linux kernel and how it already left "staging", this is a clear indication that the driver is maturing and that is amazing. It's just about time for Nouveau to "get there" and for issues to get ironed out.
I don't know but if the blob doesn't start to play well with the rest of the system they will probably end up being irrelevant in the future, just like how things like Flash are getting irrelevant and replaced by better things these days.
