IBM x86 servers are in a similar situation. Only they use Matrox G200eV graphics, for which no KMS driver exists either.

I'm curious, what exactly does flicker-free boot (KMS) gain you on a server?

mga ums driver worked ok last I checked.

Cute... but WHY? Most servers run HEADLESS with video output only needed for diagnostics.

I guess there could be a demand for real time high resolution display of graphs representing whatever requires constant attention.

Yep, I also saw these mainly (only?) on Tyan's big server boards. But might be a fair choice, if you don't want to run completely headless. Should consume not much energy but can be fine if you need local access to a machine and want to display something.
