Default 2013: A Good Year For Open-Source AMD?

Phoronix: 2013: A Good Year For Open-Source AMD?

For those disappointed by the results of the open-source vs. closed-source AMD Radeon graphics driver results on Linux at this time, you may be more pleased going forward and carry hope for open-source AMD advancements in 2013...

Michael please consider running the tests(or at least the tweaked configuration) with vblank_mode=0 when testing at high resolution.

    I've noticed 1.6x fps increase: http://openbenchmarking.org/result/1...AR-MERGE234509

Some are claiming even almost doubled fps: http://openbenchmarking.org/result/1...BY-GOG09979773

I am getting 46fps in openarena 0.8.8 with vblank_mode=0 and pcie_gen2=1 compared to the 20-30fps in the 2012 May test...

    PTS automatically sets vblank_mode=0.

    But I am running vanilla Ubuntu 12.4 with xorg-edgers, SwapBuffersWait=0, ColorTiling=1, ColorTiling2D=1, vblank_mode=0, pcie_gen2=1 and getting almost twice fps!!!

AMD will never have a good year.

Looks like I've let irritate myself by the local vdrift vblank_mode numbers. The difference must be solely due to pcie_gen2=1 then?

    Default Hopefully

Hopefully AMD will catch up with Intel when it comes to their open source drivers.

While Intel has an insanly fast 2D acceleration architecture (SNA), AMD still uses EXA which likes to copy pixmap data arround like mad, instead executing the requested operations
Hopefully the Gallium3D based DDX will solve these problems - hopefully not only for CGN.

And while Intel's OpenGL driver on Linux is more or less compareable to the closed-source counterpart, the open-source AMD opengl drivers lack a lot of features and performance.

the article is a copy/past FUD from Bridgmans propaganda.

if he recommend not to buy high-end he also means don't buy the newest stuff.

a hd5000 is the newest card you can buy if you try newer HDMI audio problems will hit you hard.

this also means linux users can not and should not buy "NEW" hardware from AMD

better buy 2 year old used stuff from ebay ......

anyway you will not buy from AMD because AMD only sell hardware to OEMs and OEMs don't give a shit about linux and AMD will always claim you never buyed a "AMD" card from AMD because of this no support.

the worst AMD GPU you can pick are the one with support from AMD an APU for example or a FireGL in the APU case you only will get 10% of the performance and in the FIREGL case only the workstation part of the EVIL Catalyst will get the money ZERO money will go into the opensource driver!

because the market share of linux doesn't matter because "andorid not a linux=ANAL" yo know you get a ANAL fuck if you buy amd hardware.
