    Needs to be a Live CD . just need it to recover files from a harddrive

    Oh yes - I forgot this one little devil. From my experience with it - I have never found any smaller GUI Linux that maintains the common desktop metaphor. If anything, DSL is the way to go for you.

    SystemRescueCd is exactly what you need: http://www.sysresccd.org

    It includes a program (for Windows and Linux) for writing and booting from a USB flash. I always have it handy :-)
