I believe kde 5.0. Will be out by then, probably sporting decent wayland support, and no doubt gnome 3.6 sporting similar functionality......

I hope the upcoming X.org 7.8 katamari will add support for xwayland and running X without root privileges.
Does this mean RAW input handling in Wine can finally be properly implemented?...including allowing clients to track raw events from input devices...

It's unlikely that by 2013 every single X app will be ported to Wayland, so many Linux users will still want the libraries & Xwayland, and all the users of other kernels (BSD, MacOS, Solaris, Cygwin, etc.) will still be wanting something to run on their non-Wayland-supported systems.
