The radeon driver supports both 2D and 3D acceleration for that card. You need the firmware-linux-nonfree package for the driver to work properly.
Hi,
Simple question but I could not find the answer though: is the open source driver work well with a radon 4870 ? I kind of understand it's ok for 2D but not for 3D... is that right ?
Currently I'm on Debian wheezy and I want to keep gnome 3 with video acceleration and all effects. I'm with fglrx 12.3 and xserver 1.11. I'm affraid I can not update to go with xserver 1.12 as AMD stop to support old radeon ><

And is there any specific xorg.conf to set ?
Years ago I remember it was not that simple to set.
xorg.conf is not needed at all with the open source drivers. You can configure some optional things with it.
Thanks, I just kick out fglrx and remove the xorg.conf, reboot, it works flawless ! It is even better than with fglrx !
