Station mode just works, but according to http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers AP mode not. But maybe a newer kernel version, or compat-wireless, fixed that.
Welcome to phoronix!
and I don't see why it shouldn't. I've been using 5ghz (on the 'a' bit, not 'n') for years on my laptop. Years uppon years (Atheros athk5 part).
OpenWRT didn't have out of the box 5GHz support, due to some regulatory issue, but that can be worked around quite easily.

I belive that is because this card, is actually a mini-pci-e card with an adapter!
http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id..._4_show&w=1920 shows it quite clearly.
So even though you are probably correct, I don't think there's any difference![]()
*do, editing still broken in Opera.
The laptop cards come without adapter card, that's the difference. Of course you can, if you have the adapter card of the 6205, put another Mini PCIe card in it. But Bluetooth won't work, Mini PCIe slots also contains a USB link that's used for Bluetooth, a desktop PCIe slot doesn't, so using the 6230 in a desktop makes no sense. Unless there are other adapter cards available that also provide USB.
I you really like it, then check this one:
