    Wayland actually has a chance at being worthwhile and succeeding in the Linux "marketplace".

    DirectFB API looks like a graphics abstraction layer done right. To bad it doesn't have more support.

    And from a technical and conceptual stand point, what is the difference?

    I think (correct me if i'm wrong) the main difference is that directfb is shipped as a standalone library when Wayland does require the presence of a compositior in order to work.
