just to show the user unfriendliness of debian. it's the only major distro that does not have a single install disk. it's either netinstall, which has to pull the intall content from the internet or multiple disks. the only sane option is to use debian live which does come as a single disk

Nonsense. They have single discs for installation. One for every DE, only XFCE and LXDE are on the same medium.

Debian developers have found packages to be about 20% smaller when using XZ rather than Gzip.

That's a serious understatement.

Except for things which are not compressible (like PNG/JPG/GIF/already compressed data), XZ can easily beat GZIP tenfold (gzip has a 32KByte dictionary, XZ's dictionary is only limited by available RAM - Fedora uses 64MB dictionary if I'm not mistaken).

The 20% is probably for the average package containing both uncompressed and compressed data. Besides the compressed files often taks up more space than non-compressed.

By the time you've finished downloading and burning all those discs, half of the packages contained within are outdated.

Who could possibly need ALL of it? And how many Library of congress units is that installed?

Can you even install everything? I've run into a few things that remove other things in the 1st party repos for Ubuntu and Fedora.

Hm, I didn't even know this existed. What do they put into them, anyway? Every single existing DEB package that works with that Debian release? I always thought openSUSE's DVD has a lot of unnecessary content, but this is ridiculous.
