Question Best way to get modern Xorg and Mesa installed on Debian 6.0.2

I just took the plunge and dumped the proprietary fglrx driver for the radeon KMS driver in Linux 3.4.4. I'm running said kernel on top of a Debian 6.0.2 system with Xorg 6.9 and Mesa 7.7 and, as expected, KMS and 2D appears to be fine but 3D isn't enabled on my Radeon HD 5770 - the software rasterizer is in use.

http://phoronix.com/forums/showthrea...g-Debian-6-0-1 suggests that Debian 6's graphics stack is too old to support my card, despite the modern kernel and the presence of the linux-firmware-nonfree package to supply the Juniper firmware. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get a modern Xorg and Mesa stack with all the trimmings loaded onto my Debian 6.0.2 install so that I can get 3D acceleration and take advantage of KMS?

I wouldn't even try. Debian has begun the final preparations for their new release, 7.0. I would install that.

First use backports, and compile drm first, then radeon driver and on top of that mesa... And that is it .
