Default Making the Most of Open Source Performance 7970

I have a Radeon HD 7970, and I would like to move away from the proprietary Catalyst drivers. I've been testing out the open source performance from the drivers that ship with Debian Sid and Trisquel 5.5, and they work well, but there are some major gaps in usability. I do game, but I don't have much time to do so as of late, so that isn't really my concern right now. My video playback, however, is terrible. The screen tears like crazy. I know that the drivers aren't all they way there yet, but is there anything that I can do to make it better until they are, or am I stuck with Catalyst?

No 2d or XV accel for your card yet. Better use Catalyst.
