Uh, an how far is this "opus" codec already supported? Can't remember having seen it anywhere before.
Maybe it is a good piece of tech but then it should be promoted and support included in programs.

Maybe, maybe later. Even if never it's not that important these days.

The big difference this time (as compared to vorbis) is that Opus is a really good thing, and a standard, and backed by serious players and software (VLC, gstreamer, K-lite-codec etc). So I guess in like 5 years it will become successful like mkv, which isn't supported by M$ nor Apple but is still widespread.
In fact there's effort incorporating Opus into mkv and/or webm.

If it truly beats both speex and vorbis in quality, then it's only the enc/dec performance that it needs to up. If I remember right from previous threads on it, it was several times slower in decoding vs vorbis.

It's funny because Skype said yesterday that they just finished implementing opus support (but then Skype developed the SILK codec used by Opus, and so Microsoft pledged their IP to be royalty-free when used in Opus, so it's not surprising).
Then, it may also become a web standard requirement (for html5 voip).

All in all, it's highly probable that Microsoft and apple will support it.

There are different kinds of support. Even though MS build Opus into Skype, MS may choose not to support playback of Opus-encoded music in WMP.
